The Pillory of Sernancelhe is located in Praça da República, in the heart of the village. Its central position highlights it in the urban environment, standing in front of the building that once served as a prison and in a square that incorporates elements of traditional regional architecture. This location allows for a peaceful observation of the monument within the context of the settlement.
Built in the 16th century, more precisely in 1554, the Pillory of Sernancelhe is a testament to the municipal autonomy that the locality acquired over the centuries. This type of monument was a symbol of municipal jurisdiction and power, marking the center of the village's administrative and judicial life. Originally, its function was public and judicial, but today it serves as an important historical-cultural landmark, inviting reflection on Sernancelhe's past.
The pillory is a remarkable piece of granite stonework, notable for its octagonal cage typology. It stands on a base formed by four octagonal steps, from which rises a shaft of the same section. At the top, a frustum-shaped frame displays the date of its erection and delicate carvings. The upper part culminates in a cage structure, adorned by eight cylindrical colonettes, which support a dome. At the pinnacle of the dome, rests a small metal cross. An interesting detail is the presence of an iron band on the lower third of the shaft, a distinctive element of its construction.
