Senhora do Barrocal is located in the locality of Romãs, in the municipality of Sátão. This site stands out in the landscape due to its position on an elevation, characterized by the presence of large granite rock formations, known as 'tors'.

Its position offers wide views over the surrounding territory, extending to the banks of the Coja stream, one of the tributaries of the Dão River, placing the site within a natural and mountainous environment.

Vestiges of a Distant Past

In Senhora do Barrocal, visitors can find the remains of a small early medieval settlement, whose occupation dates back to the second half of the 10th century. Archaeological investigations have revealed a notable defensive structure, composed of a thick stone wall, against which the dwellings of the time were built.

Its robust architecture and the importance of its location suggest that this was a significant place for an elite of the region. The history of this settlement appears to have had an abrupt end, marked by a fire that paradoxically contributed to the preservation of many of its secrets.

Daily Life Revealed

The archaeological work at Senhora do Barrocal has allowed for the collection of a diverse set of elements that provide a unique insight into the daily lives of its inhabitants. Among the most significant findings are thousands of charred seeds of cereals and legumes, which inform us about the community's diet and agricultural practices.

The discovery of pottery fragments of Islamic origin, dating from the 10th century, is particularly interesting, as it indicates a network of contacts and exchanges that went beyond local borders. Stone tools, glass pieces, and metal elements were also found, in addition to architectural evidence of a possible religious temple in the vicinity, suggesting the existence of a place of worship dedicated in 971.
