Situated in the heart of Sendim village, Tabuaço municipality, the Pillory is located in a tranquil square. Its positioning, in an urban area but with views of the surroundings, allows visitors to enjoy a moment of calm and contemplate the region's landscape. It is a visible point, harmoniously integrated into the town's fabric, ideal for a brief pause.
This Pillory is a landmark dating back to the 16th century, a period of great expansion for Portugal. Originally, these monuments served as a symbol of municipal and royal authority, marking the jurisdiction of a town or municipality, and where judicial sentences were executed. Although no specific Manueline charter is known for Sendim, its construction is attributed to this period due to the presence of an element resembling an armillary sphere at its top, a distinctive emblem of King Manuel I's reign. Currently, the Sendim Pillory is an important testimony to the past, inviting reflection on local history.
Carved from solid granite ashlar, the Sendim Pillory reveals an architectural composition inspired by 16th-century models. Its base is formed by three square steps, leading to an imposing shaft. This shaft begins with a quadrangular section, gradually transforming into octagonal through elegant chamfers on the edges, and resuming a square shape near the top. The finial is notable, with a quadrangular bowl-shaped top piece, displaying decorations that include the probable vestige of an armillary sphere. At the corners of this piece, four small pyramidal pinnacles rise, adorned with rounded details.
Due to its historical and architectural value, the Sendim Pillory has been classified as a Property of Public Interest. This distinction highlights the monument's importance in the panorama of Portuguese cultural heritage and the need for its preservation for future generations. It is a recognition of its role as a guardian of Sendim's memory and identity.
