The São Miguel do Outeiro Pillory is located in Largo da Praça, the central point of the village of São Miguel do Outeiro, in the municipality of Tondela. Situated in an urban area and on a hillside, this monument stands out in the square's landscape, isolated but with a prominent presence beside the public road.
Erected in the 18th century, with the date of 1766 inscribed on its shaft, this pillory evokes the time when São Miguel do Outeiro held the status of municipal seat. Originally, these landmarks were emblems of justice and municipal autonomy. However, due to the extinction of the municipality in 1855, shortly after its construction, the São Miguel do Outeiro Pillory immediately took on a predominantly symbolic character. Currently, it is recognized as a Property of Public Interest, serving as an important testament to the region's history and identity.
Built entirely of granite ashlar, the pillory exhibits a classic and elegant composition. Its base is octagonal, with three projecting steps that give it prominence. Above the base rises a monolithic column of equally octagonal section, notable for its solidity. The ensemble is topped by an octagonal capital, decorated with layered moldings, culminating in a fusiform and bulging finial, richly adorned with vegetal elements, surmounted by a small knob. It is a piece that invites close observation of its artistic details.
