The Ladário Pillory is located in the locality of Ladário, part of the parish of São Miguel de Vila Boa, in the municipality of Sátão. This monument is set in a predominantly rural environment, standing out in a square situated behind the old Parish Church. Its surroundings are characterized by traditional stone-built houses, contributing to a picturesque and historic setting.
This stone pillory, classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1933, is a striking testament to Ladário's past. Its erection is linked to the granting of the Manueline charter in 1514, a royal document that elevated the settlement to the status of a municipality, conferring upon it its own autonomy and jurisdiction. The pillory, at the time, symbolized this municipal independence, serving as a judicial landmark where public orders and penalties were carried out. Ladário's history dates back even further, to the 12th century, when it was made a privileged territory by Queen Teresa and King Afonso Henriques.
Built of granite ashlar, the Ladário Pillory presents a structure that is a beautiful example of the popular architecture of the period. It stands on a quadrangular plinth of three steps. Above this, rests a shaft column that begins quadrangularly, becoming octagonal through the chamfering of the edges, and which resumes a quadrangular shape at the top, simulating a capital. The ensemble is topped by a smooth pyramidal pinnacle, crowned by a sphere, giving it a distinctive silhouette. Although it is believed to have been erected in the 16th century, some details suggest characteristics of a 17th-century monument, with a volumetric play that combines simplicity and geometric forms.
