Situated in a higher area of the city of Viseu, in the Bairro das Mesuras, this building stands out in the urban landscape. Its position atop a small hill gives it a certain isolation and prominence, allowing views of the city's surroundings and making it a visual landmark. The main facade is preceded by a fenced courtyard, creating a distinct welcoming space.

Past and Present of a Historic Building

The history of this imposing building dates back to the 18th century, with its cornerstone laid in 1793. Initially known as Hospital Novo da Misericórdia and later as Hospital de São Teotónio, its construction spanned almost fifty years into the early 19th century. For a long time, it served as an important health center, receiving its first patients in 1842. In the 21st century, the building underwent a remarkable transformation, being converted into a Pousada, which allowed it to have a new life, while maintaining its original structure and character.

Architecture and Neoclassical Symbolism

The architectural design of this old hospital is a beautiful example of the neoclassical style. The main facade, facing northeast, features an elegant staircase leading to the churchyard. Its two floors are notable, with the upper one being more ornate, and the slightly advanced central body marked by pilasters and a perfect arch portal. At the top, a triangular pediment displays the ancient arms of the Portuguese Royal House, flanked by three statues representing the theological virtues: Charity in the center, with Faith on the right and Hope on the left. On the corners of the facade, it is possible to observe the coats of arms of the city of Viseu and the Santa Casa da Misericórdia. Inside, the atrium welcomes visitors with embossed tiles and grand staircases, which lead to a central cloister, a space that, once open, was covered in a recent intervention, becoming the heart of the building and enhancing its uniqueness.
