The Megalithic Enclosure of São Cristóvão consists of a cromlech, one of the most emblematic structures of the megalithic period in Portugal. This set of stones, arranged in an organized manner, serves as a remarkable testimony to the ancient communities that inhabited these lands thousands of years ago. Originally, the enclosure had a funerary function, which is evidenced by the presence of barrows, structures linked to burial and cult practices. Visiting this place is to delve into a remote era, understanding the intelligence and meaning attributed to these monuments by our ancestors.
Built with large blocks of granite, the cromlech of São Cristóvão impresses with its robustness and the way these stones blend into the mountain landscape. The selection and transport of these rocks, without modern means, reveal a remarkable capacity for organization and ingenuity. Currently, the enclosure is recognized as an important historical-cultural landmark, maintaining its status as a Site of Public Interest. The surrounding natural environment, characterized by the isolation and vastness of the Montemuro Mountain Range, offers an experience of contemplation, where history and landscape merge into a unique setting.
