This remarkable section of the ancient Roman road is located in the urbanisation of Coimbrões, in the parish of São João de Lourosa, in the municipality of Viseu. It is situated in an environment that combines the urban landscape with the serenity of an area that still preserves traces of past centuries, inviting reflection on the historical continuity of the site.
The "Section of Roman Road between Ranhados and Coimbrões" constitutes a tangible testament to the presence and engineering of the Romans in Portuguese territory. Classified as a Property of Public Interest, it represents a valuable portion of the vast network of roads that the Romans built to connect the various regions of their empire, facilitating trade, troop movement, and communication. Walking this path is like travelling through time and feeling the dimension of local history.
The construction of this Roman road demonstrates the technical mastery of ancient engineers. Its uppermost layer is composed of large stone slabs, carefully levelled with mortar, evidencing the robustness and durability of the work. Beneath these slabs, one can observe layers of earth, pottery, grit, and small stones, which served as a solid base for the structure. The route itself is characterised by a winding layout, marked by several curves, which adapts to the topography of the terrain, although it terminates abruptly due to the subsequent opening of a municipal road in the area.
