The Raízes e Memórias space is located in the village of Marmeleira, nestled in the Vale de Borregão area, in the municipality of Mortágua. This village, recognized as an "Aldeia de Portugal" (Village of Portugal), stands out for its cultural heritage and its remarkable history, situating the museum in an environment that breathes authenticity and tradition.
Inaugurated in 2016, Raízes e Memórias was conceived as a space for safeguarding and sharing local heritage. The museum offers a glimpse into the rural, domestic, and commercial daily life experienced between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, showcasing the customs and traditions that shaped the lives of the people of the Mortágua municipality. The exhibited collection, mostly donated by locals from Marmeleira and its surroundings, confers authenticity and a strong bond with the community, revealing the deep roots of this territory.
The museum core is organized into different environments that transport visitors to the past. Highlights include the reconstruction of a Casa do Lavrador, which illustrates the dwelling of a traditional family from the region, and the recreation of emblematic commercial spaces of the village, such as Loja Progresso and Alfaiataria Lysiana. Other rooms, such as the Sala Zé Pereiro, reveal traditional activities, while the Sala Basílio Lopes Pereira explores the rich history of Marmeleira. Ancient documents, over a century old, complement the collection, enriching the local narrative.
Marmeleira is historically recognized as a bastion of republican ideals, freedom, and democracy. In the early 20th century, the village was one of the most active republican centers in the Beira Alta region. The Raízes e Memórias space dedicates rooms to the evocation of these ideals, as well as to the figures who distinguished themselves in the fight for freedom, such as the brothers António Lopes Araújo, Serafim Lopes Pereira, and Basílio Lopes Pereira. The importance of education and instruction is emphasized, elements that were seen as essential for societal progress and more democratic access to knowledge.
This heritage is still visible through the memory of pioneering 20th-century initiatives, such as the Escola Livre da Irmânia, the newspaper “O Sol Nascente”, and the Centro Democrático de Educação Popular, which aimed to promote culture and instruction among the population. Complementing this aspect, the museum complex includes a natural amphitheater, which serves as a stage for various cultural activities, perpetuating the spirit of dynamism and appreciation of knowledge in the village.
