The Quartel da Paz is located in Viseu, integrated into the Cava de Viriato area, an emblematic part of the city. The building is situated next to the Church of São José, in Largo Nossa Senhora da Conceição. Its location in Ribeira, near the Pavia river, places it in an area that has been undergoing valorization and beautification, contributing to the revitalization of this part of the city.
The history of Quartel da Paz spans over two hundred years, having had a past with distinct purposes. Initially, it functioned as a military warehouse, later evolving into a barracks occupied by the National Republican Guard (GNR) for about eighty years. After a period of abandonment and visible degradation, the building underwent a profound requalification. This process transformed the old military barracks into a renovated and modern space, which was inaugurated in 2011, giving it a new life and purpose.
Today, Quartel da Paz is an active community hub, dissociated from its original military function. Its current name reflects the new spirit of the place, guided by "Faith, Peace, and Love." This space is dedicated to activities aimed at the development of the local community, namely through the training of children, young people, and adults. It serves as a center for catechesis and for the promotion of Christian and civic values, aspiring to be a point of light and inspiration for the entire city of Viseu. Symbolic elements, such as the representation of the olive tree, which evokes Peace, and flowers, which refer to Beauty, adorn its interior, reinforcing the message of harmony and renewal.
