It originated as part of the estate of the old Episcopal Palace, having been enriched and expanded through the initiative of Bishop D. Miguel da Silva. This prelate, who returned from Rome in 1525, brought with him Renaissance influences, reflected in the style of the Fontelo gardens, which evoke the aesthetic of Italian gardens of the era. His vision was not limited to the construction of the palace, but extended to the replanting and enhancement of this woodland.
