Fontelo Park stretches across a vast green area to the east of the city of Viseu, located within the Santa Eugénia neighborhood. Its location grants it an important role as one of the main spaces for contact with nature within the urban perimeter, offering a smooth transition between the city fabric and the tranquility of a wooded area.
This park boasts a profound history, dating back to the 16th century. It originated as part of the estate of the old Episcopal Palace, having been enriched and expanded through the initiative of Bishop D. Miguel da Silva. This prelate, who returned from Rome in 1525, brought with him Renaissance influences, reflected in the style of the Fontelo gardens, which evoke the aesthetic of Italian gardens of the era. His vision was not limited to the construction of the palace, but extended to the replanting and enhancement of this woodland.
With an area exceeding ten hectares, Fontelo woodland asserts itself as Viseu's largest public green space. Its lush vegetation offers a serene and refreshing environment, acting as a true lung for the city. It is an inviting place for those seeking moments of rest, peaceful walks, or simply the opportunity to be in harmony with nature, observing the diversity of local flora that fills the park.
Beyond its natural and historical value, Fontelo Park is a meeting point for various activities. Its layout allows for both relaxed strolls and physical exercise, with paths inviting walks and runs. Throughout the park, there are areas prepared for different purposes, including a fitness trail and larger spaces accommodating various sports facilities, making it a dynamic and versatile location for inhabitants and visitors.
