Caramulo Park is located in Guardão de Cima, in the municipality of Tondela, nestled on one of the slopes of the Serra do Caramulo. This space, an integral part of the local landscape, is adjacent to the old sanatorium building, positioned to the north. It has two entry points; one to the north and one to the south, the latter inviting visitors through an avenue lined with imposing lime trees, cedars, American oaks, and Lawson cypresses. From the park, perspectives open up onto the surrounding natural environment.
The park's layout reflects a modernist style, forming an oval shape where circular paths interconnect between terraces, communicating via staircases. Additionally, winding trails invite visitors to ascend the slope, through the tree canopy, to the highest point of the hill. Its vegetation is rich and varied, with cherry laurel hedges appearing among lime trees, hawthorns, magnolias, sycamore maples, and rhododendrons. Various benches, strategically placed under the shade of the trees, provide places for rest and contemplation.
On one of the park's lower terraces, visitors will find a bust honoring Dr. Jerónimo Lacerda (1899-1945), a fundamental figure in local history for having founded the Grande Sanatório do Caramulo in 1921. Further down, a large pergola stands out, offering generous panoramic views of the landscape. This area, shaded by lime trees, cypresses, and poplars, constitutes a pleasant space, inviting moments of outdoor relaxation.
Caramulo Park bears witness to the legacy of a former sanatorium resort, reflecting an important phase in the history of health and architecture in the region. Despite transformations over the decades, the park maintains an atmosphere of tranquility and offers a natural setting for enjoyment. Its thoughtful design and diverse flora contribute to a calm and immersive strolling experience, within a mountain context that invites the appreciation of nature.
