The Panchorra Bridge is located in the locality of the same name, within the municipality of Resende. Situated at an altitude of approximately one thousand meters, right on the plateau of the Serra do Montemuro, this bridge crosses the Cabrum River, connecting its banks in a stunning and immersive natural landscape. Its position offers direct contact with the mountain environment, providing sweeping views over the river basin and the surrounding mountainous terrain.
This bridge is distinguished by its architecture and construction technique, a remarkable example of vernacular engineering. Its structure consists of two arches, revealing meticulous stonework: the voussoirs, which form the arches, are made of regular ashlar, while the rest of the bridge's body displays a more adapted arrangement of stones, a testament to the work of local master builders. Designed as a robust crossing, the bridge utilizes the river's natural rock outcrops to support its piers. The deck, which has a horizontal profile, is fitted with parapets, giving it the necessary strength to support the passage of farm carts and the movement of livestock, common uses at the time of its construction.
The Panchorra Bridge was built before the 17th century with a crucial purpose for the local community: to ensure safe and continuous access to the agricultural and forestry properties that lay beyond the Cabrum River. Its construction reflects a practical, daily need, becoming an integral part of the village's rural life. Although it was associated with a Roman origin for several decades, possibly due to a nearby ancient route, the bridge is now recognized as a significant example of the region's vernacular architecture. Since 2013, the Panchorra Bridge has been classified as a Monument of Public Interest, a recognition of its heritage and cultural value. The locality of Panchorra itself has historical records dating back to 1258, highlighting the antiquity of human settlement in the area.
