The Pelourinho of Oliveira do Conde is located in the civil parish of Oliveira do Conde, a locality within the municipality of Carregal do Sal. It is situated in an open square, known as Largo do Pelourinho, in the Azenha area. Its central and isolated position allows the monument to be easily visible and appreciated by passers-by, asserting itself as a landmark in the urban fabric of the settlement.
Built in the 16th century, the Pelourinho of Oliveira do Conde is an important landmark in local history. Its erection is intimately linked to the granting of the Manueline charter to the locality, a royal document that, at the time, conferred administrative and judicial autonomy to the towns. Originally, these monuments were symbols of local power and justice, marking the place where laws were read and sentences applied. Although it no longer serves its judicial function, the pillory remains a silent testament to Oliveira do Conde's past, evoking its importance as the seat of a municipality.
This architectural example stands out for its robust construction in granite ashlar. It rests on a base of three square steps, which give it a solid foundation on the ground. The most distinctive element is its shaft, which rises in a torqued, or spiraled, manner, adorned with three flutes that ascend in a helical motion. At the top, a simple capital, with discreet carvings, supports the finial. This capping element, conical in shape and also with a spiral design, culminates in "knobs" and an iron cross, elements that give it a unique identity. Its resemblance to the pillory of São João das Areias attests to the sharing of styles and influences of the era. Due to its value and significance, the Pelourinho of Oliveira do Conde has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1933.
