The Pillory of Nespereira is located in the town of Nespereira, in the municipality of Cinfães, within the Pertença area. The monument stands in a central square, halfway up a slope, and its privileged location offers a harmonious setting with the surrounding urban and rural environment, marked by a landscape of natural interest. Its presence stands out, inviting close observation of its detail and the space that embraces it.
This 16th-century pillory is a testament to the history of Nespereira, marking the period when the village obtained its charter, granted by D. Manuel I in 1514. Its erection symbolized the judicial and administrative authority that the town had conquered, marking the center of decisions and public life of the time. It thus represents a fundamental element in understanding Nespereira's municipal past, before its integration into the municipality of Cinfães.
Throughout the centuries, the pillory has been a link between the present and the past, reflecting the community's transformations. Its existence underlines the historical importance Nespereira held as a municipal seat, preserving the memory of a time of autonomy and self-organization.
Built from solid granite ashlar, the Pillory of Nespereira displays a robust structure approximately three meters high. Its base rests on a quadrangular plinth composed of four steps, which adapt slightly to the unevenness of the terrain. From this base rises a monolithic cylindrical shaft, which gently tapers as it ascends, culminating in a distinctive finial.
The crowning of the pillory is notable for its "fusiform pinecone," a frustum-shaped piece with a high, rounded top that gives the monument its distinctive silhouette. This design, characteristic of the 16th-century style, reflects the art of the era and the mastery of the stonemasons who shaped it. The monument is classified as a Property of Public Interest, in recognition of its patrimonial relevance.
The Pillory of Nespereira, which originally served as an element of judicial administration, has over time assumed a new role. Today, it constitutes a historical-cultural landmark and a point of reference for the community and for visitors to Nespereira. Its permanence in the central square of the locality reflects the valorization of local memory and heritage.
Although it has suffered periods of lesser care, such as when it was integrated into a wall or in a less favorable state, the pillory has undergone interventions that restored it to its dignity. It now remains a point of contemplation, a visual element that links the current landscape to the rich historical heritage of the Cinfães region.
