The museum is located in Praça da República, in the heart of São João da Pesqueira's historic center. This square is marked by buildings dating back to the 16th century, including structures of civil, religious, and military character. It is also possible to observe vestiges of the old medieval fortress that once existed in this place, lending the area an atmosphere of profound historical heritage.
The building housing the museum has its own significant history. Its Baroque-style facade is adorned with a royal coat of arms, bearing witness to its importance. Commissioned by Queen D. Maria I in 1794, this space originally served as the seat of municipal power. Later, in the early 20th century, it became the District Prison. This succession of functions, from political center to detention space, reflects the different eras of the town. A restoration intervention at the turn of the millennium allowed the property to be adapted for its current cultural vocation, keeping alive the memory of the judicial and political power that once resided there.
Inside the Eduardo Tavares Museum, visitors will find a tribute to the local sculptor Eduardo Tavares, exhibiting a significant part of his work. In addition to the section dedicated to sculpture, the museum also houses an archaeological core. This collection of findings, from various parts of the municipality, documents six millennia of history of the region, offering a glimpse into the deep past of São João da Pesqueira through ancient remains. The coexistence of these two collections, one artistic and one archaeological, allows for a broader understanding of the cultural roots and human evolution in the territory.
