The museum exhibits a vast collection of weapons, uniforms, and military equipment throughout history, including artifacts from the Peninsular Wars, the 19th century, the First World War, and the Colonial War.
The Infantry Regiment No. 14, also known as "Infantes de Viriato," has deep historical roots dating back to 1657. The military unit has a special connection to the legend of Viriathus, the Lusitanian warrior, who allegedly had connections with Viseu.
The regiment is composed of approximately 500 soldiers and is commanded by a Colonel. It has several specialized sections to assist the Commander and is responsible for organizing, training, and maintaining one of the Intervention Brigade's Infantry Battalions.
The Infantry Regiment No. 14's barracks covers a significant area, with 82,000 square meters of covered space and several buildings, including barracks, a sports pavilion, an infirmary, refectory, and more. In addition, it offers training grounds for military practices.
The regiment has contributed to Training and Peacekeeping Missions in various parts of the world, including Afghanistan, Kosovo, Iraq, the Central African Republic, and Timor.
The Infantry Regiment No. 14 celebrates its Commemorative Day on March 19th, in honor of a daring and successful raid carried out during the First World War.
In addition to its historical and military value, the museum and the regiment play an important role in supporting Civil Protection authorities and Municipalities in actions of prevention and combatting fires and natural disasters, demonstrating their commitment to the local community.
Visitors have the opportunity to explore the military history of Portugal, including the Peninsular Wars and the regiment's involvement in various campaigns. The museum offers a fascinating insight into the military past of Viseu and the region.
