The Diocesan Museum is situated in the Sé area, in the city centre of Lamego. It is located in an area of great historical and heritage importance, benefiting from an urban environment that reflects the antiquity and legacy of the locality. Its position integrates it into the Protection Zone of Lamego Cathedral (Sé de Lamego), highlighting its relationship with the city's historical and religious context.
This museum occupies a building with a rich trajectory, formerly known as Casa do Poço (House of the Well). The main construction of the property dates back to the 18th century, but its architecture reveals even older elements, such as twin windows from the 16th century, indicating a reuse of earlier structures. In the 21st century, the building underwent a significant renovation project, conceived by architect Manuel Tomás de Carvalho Botelho, to adapt it to its museological function. This intervention was recognized with an honourable mention in a Douro architecture award in 2006, highlighting the value of the work carried out in its requalification.
As a Diocesan Museum, the space is dedicated to presenting and preserving the cultural and religious heritage of the Diocese of Lamego. A visit allows for the discovery of a vast collection of sacred art and liturgical objects that tell centuries of the region's history. The pieces on display include sacred vessels, vestments, paintings, sculptures, and historical documents, offering an overview of the traditions and faith that have shaped this community over time. It is a place that provides an understanding of Lamego's spiritual and artistic legacy.
