The Monument in Homage to Former Combatants stands in Ribeiradio, a tranquil locality that is part of the municipality of Oliveira de Frades. The site where it was built offers a serene environment, inviting contemplation, being harmoniously integrated into the region's landscape, characterized by its quietness and natural beauty.
This monument was conceived as an enduring tribute to those who served the country in combat contexts, paying special homage to the former combatants from the municipality of Oliveira de Frades. It is a point for deep reflection, marking the memory and sacrifice, particularly of the nine men native to this land who lost their lives in service to the homeland during the Overseas War. Its presence invites recognition and gratitude for a significant part of Portuguese history.
The monument's design, authored by architect and engineer José Paulo Loureiro, incorporates rich symbolism. At its core, a pattern stands out, referencing the era of the Great Navigations, evoking the vastness of the territories once linked to Portugal. This central element is complemented by panels representing geographies that were part of the former Portuguese empire, namely Angola, Mozambique, Guinea, East Timor, Goa, Daman, and Diu. On the memorial's main obelisk, the names of the combatants who perished are engraved, giving the monument a dimension of individualized homage and perpetuation of memory.
