Category: Civil Architecture > Arch

District: Viseu > Tarouca > Mondim da Beira

Location

The Arch of Paradela is situated in a tranquil, rural setting, in the locality of Mondim da Beira, part of the municipality of Tarouca. This historic structure stands isolated on a gentle slope, in harmony with the surrounding rural landscape. Its location, near the Barosa River, contributes to the serene and inviting atmosphere of the site.

A Landmark with History and Mystery

This remarkable arch, built of granite, is an architectural testament believed to date between the 12th and 13th centuries. Its true original purpose, however, is the subject of different theories, lending it an enigmatic character. One interpretation suggests that the arch served as a medieval couto landmark, marking the boundaries of an area under the jurisdiction of a monastery. Another perspective points to the possibility of it having been a funerary monument, erected to mark the burial site of figures of the era, such as Diogo Anes, who is believed to have owned these lands in 1175.

Oral tradition also associates the Arch of Paradela with a significant moment in regional history: the point where the funeral procession of Count D. Pedro, illegitimate son of D. Dinis, made its last stop on its way to the Monastery of São João de Tarouca, where he was to be buried. Regardless of its exact origin, the arch represents a link to the region's medieval past, inviting contemplation of its long history.

Heritage and Surroundings

The impressiveness of its structure, conceived in robust granite and with a pointed profile suggesting Romanesque-Gothic influences, stands out in the landscape. The arch has been recognized for its historical and architectural importance, being classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1954. Throughout the centuries, the monument has been subject to preservation interventions, including reconstruction and consolidation works, ensuring its permanence for future generations.

The toponym "Paradela" itself evokes the idea of a place where one can stop and rest after an ascent. Thus, a visit to this arch is an opportunity for a tranquil pause, immersed in nature and history, offering a glimpse into a distant past in this corner of the municipality of Tarouca.
