High atop the majestic Serra do Buçaco, in the parish of Trezói, in the municipality of Mortágua, stands the Sula Mill. This ancient windmill is situated in an isolated spot, on the summit of a hill, from which a wide view extends over the vast valley of Mortágua. Its unique positioning invites tranquil observation of the surrounding rural environment, marked by the force of nature and the breadth of the horizon.
Built sometime between the 17th and 18th centuries, the Sula Mill is a remarkable example of vernacular architecture associated with cereal milling. Its structure features a circular plan with a trunk-conical shaped body, culminating in a conical roof. Its robust walls were erected with local materials, such as schist and quartz, testifying to the constructive wisdom of the time.
Although the mill underwent recovery works in 1995, and its roof is now covered with metal sheets for better conservation, it is evident that it does not preserve its original canvas sails nor the wooden mast that once propelled it, marking the transition from its functional use to its current status as a heritage landmark.
Currently, the Sula Mill offers one of the most captivating panoramic views in the region. Given its elevation and exposure to the winds, the site functions as a natural viewpoint, providing visitors with the opportunity to enjoy landscapes that stretch as far as the eye can see. It is a place where the quietude of the mountain blends with the feeling of being in a historic spot, inviting contemplation and reflection on the surrounding nature and the legacy of the past.
