The Pillory of Mões is located in the town of Mões, which is part of the Union of Parishes of Mões, Meixedo and Montedor, in the municipality of Castro Daire. This monument is situated in an urban area, on a hillside, standing out in the public space and harmonizing with the surrounding road. It is a visible landmark that invites a pause for observation.
This pillory represents an important historical memory of Mões. Although its significance is associated with the charter granted by D. Manuel I in 1514, which granted judicial and administrative autonomy to the locality, it is believed that the structure visible today was built in the 17th century. Its presence recalls the times when Mões was an independent municipality, one of the few in the Castro Daire region to maintain this status for many centuries, until its extinction in 1855.
The Pillory of Mões is built in granite stonework, a robust material characteristic of the region. Its base consists of a quadrangular plinth with four steps, rising from the ground. Upon this base, a column with a smooth cylindrical shaft stands, decorated with moldings at the base and topped by a cubic piece at the upper part, where a sphere rests. The monument underwent a restoration intervention in 1957, seeking to preserve its original form, although some mutilation of its upper part has been noted over time.
