The Alcofra Medieval Tower stands in the tranquil area of Cabo de Vila, belonging to the locality of Alcofra, in the municipality of Vouzela. Its location provides a serene environment and an unobstructed view over the valley, with the Alcofra river tracing its course through the surrounding landscape.
This imposing tower, built between the 14th and 15th centuries, is a remarkable example of the fortified architecture of the period. Made of robust granite, it originally served as a stately home, reflecting the power and defensive needs of its occupants. Its excellent state of conservation is notable, allowing visitors to appreciate the solidity and aesthetics of a medieval construction that has withstood the test of time.
The history of the Alcofra Tower is shrouded in mystery. Few records survive regarding its builders or its first inhabitants, partly due to past investigations motivated by the popular belief of a hidden treasure within, which altered its original structure. One of its most intriguing secrets are the enigmatic initials 'AMBDM' engraved on two of its facades, whose meaning still remains to be deciphered. An ancient local legend, unconfirmed by archaeological findings, whispers of a secret tunnel that would connect the tower to the distant Monte da Gralheira.
Access to the interior of the Alcofra Medieval Tower invites a true immersion into the Middle Ages. This unique space allows for a better understanding of the life and function of these ancient tower-houses, which served as both residences and defensive strongholds. It is an opportunity to contemplate an authentic piece of Portuguese heritage and reflect on the distant times that shaped the region.
