Situated in the Raposeira area, in the municipality of Mangualde, the Citânia da Raposeira is located on the western slope of Monte da Senhora do Castelo. This position, northeast of the municipal seat, is part of an environment that was once crucial for Roman life in the region.
The Citânia da Raposeira was, in Roman times, an important mansio, or inn. It was a stopping and welcoming point for travelers who journeyed along the extensive roads of the Empire, offering rest and supplies. This place served as a fundamental support center for the transit and commercial exchanges of that period, witnessing the movement of people and goods across Lusitania.
One of the most notable aspects of this site are the remains of its private thermae. These baths were not just a luxury, but an essential element of Roman life, providing hygiene and well-being to those who stopped or resided here. On site, it is still possible to observe the base of the caldarium, the hot water room, as well as a well and several conduits that attest to the complexity of the hydraulic system of the time. These elements offer a glimpse into daily life and concerns for comfort in Antiquity.
Dating from the early 1st century and with occupation extending until the 4th or 5th centuries, the Citânia da Raposeira is recognized as the most significant Roman archaeological site in the municipality of Mangualde. Its historical and patrimonial value is underscored by its classification as a Site of Public Interest, revealing a nucleus of occupation and a Romanized daily life that is still being deeply understood through studies and archaeological discoveries.
