Dating back to the 12th century, the Monastery of São João de Tarouca is a landmark in Portuguese monastic history, establishing itself as one of the first and most influential monasteries of the Cistercian Order in the country. Its foundation, which began in 1152 and culminated in its consecration in 1169, reflects the monks' dedication. Over the centuries, the Cistercian presence profoundly marked the region, not only through religious practice but also through agricultural and wine-making development, whose traditions and customs took root and endure to this day. Due to its undeniable historical and cultural value, the monastery is classified as a National Monument.

Architecture and Symbolism

The structure of the monastery, which currently serves as the parish church, stands out for its Romanesque matrix, enriched by later interventions, such as those from the 17th century, which introduced Gothic elements. The main facade, built of masonry and reinforced by robust buttresses, features an imposing rose window above the entrance, a central element in its composition. Observing the exterior, it is possible to distinguish the coats of arms of the Cistercian Order and the arms of Portugal, as well as the figure of Saint John the Baptist. Inside, the visibility of the cornerstone underscores the authenticity and longevity of this remarkable construction.
