Lamego Cathedral is located in the city's historic center. Its central position makes it an unavoidable landmark in Lamego's urban fabric, easily accessible for those exploring the locality.
The history of Lamego Cathedral dates back to the 12th century, with its official foundation taking place in 1129. Erected over the remains of an ancient chapel dedicated to Saint Sebastian, this cathedral was consecrated in 1175, dedicated to Santa Maria and the same Saint Sebastian. Its existence reflects the importance of the restoration of the Lamego diocese, a milestone after the period of Arab occupation in the region.
Throughout the centuries, Lamego Cathedral has undergone transformations, today presenting a fusion of styles that tell its long history. From the original Romanesque period, the imposing square medieval tower remains, standing out on the façade. Significant modifications in the 16th and 18th centuries introduced Gothic elements, which are predominant on the exterior, and also an elegant Renaissance cloister, with its characteristic arches. Later, in the early 15th century, the imposing Manueline portal of the main front was added, constituting one of the most notable examples of this style in the region. The interior, in turn, exhibits Baroque grandeur, visible in the chancel and transept.
Classified as a National Monument since 1910, Lamego Cathedral is not only a building of architectural prominence but also a center of profound religious and cultural significance. Over time, it has been the setting for the institution of Marian devotion and has housed various funerary chapels, some of which hold the tombs of bishops who marked the history of the diocese. Its enduring presence is a testament to the faith and historical evolution of Lamego.
