The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies stands majestically atop the Mount of Saint Stephen, in the city of Lamego, integrated into the Almacave and Sé area. Its elevated position gives it a notable presence in the urban landscape, offering wide views over the city and the surrounding scenery.
This emblematic architectural complex is connected to the center of Lamego by a monumental staircase, which provides a scenic route and a unique perspective on the site as one approaches or departs from the sanctuary.
The main access to the Sanctuary is through an impressive staircase, with 686 steps distributed over nine flights, which constitute a work of art in the Baroque and Rococo styles. Along its length, visitors can appreciate various landings, each adorned with decorative elements, including chapels, statues, fountains, and obelisks.
One of the most notable points is the Courtyard of the Kings, where eighteen statues represent kings of Israel, symbolizing the ancestry of the Virgin Mary. At the base of the staircase, there are figures alluding to the four seasons of the year, and fountains such as the Pelican Fountain or the Mermaid Fountain enrich the path, inviting contemplation of the artistic details.
At the top of the mount, the Sanctuary building presents a granite façade that combines Baroque and Rococo features, flanked by imposing bell towers. Its construction began in 1750, extending over a long period until its completion in 1905, evidencing the grandeur of the original project.
Inside, the main altar stands out with the image of Our Lady of Remedies, sculpted in wood, which is the center of local devotion. The temple is adorned with three stained-glass windows depicting images of Our Lady of Conception, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the Annunciation. The interior walls are covered with tile panels representing scenes from the life of the Virgin, and side altars dedicated to Saint Joachim and Saint Anne complement the rich ornamentation.
Surrounding the Sanctuary is Saint Stephen Park, a verdant area that offers a serene environment suitable for peaceful strolls. The park is crossed by paths and hosts a rich diversity of tree species, both native and exotic, including oaks, lime trees, poplars, and, in particular, chestnut trees.
One of its natural treasures is a centenary chestnut tree, over 700 years old, classified as a Tree of Public Interest, which stands as a living testament to the passage of time. The space also features a lake and caves, which contribute to the tranquil and scenic atmosphere of the place.
The history of devotion to Our Lady of Remedies in this place dates back to the 14th century, with the construction of a chapel dedicated to Saint Stephen in 1361. Over the centuries, the belief in the Virgin's ability to provide relief from various afflictions grew, culminating in the dedication of the current sanctuary to Our Lady of Remedies.
The Sanctuary, the staircase, and the park were classified as Property of Public Interest in 1984, highlighting their historical, artistic, and cultural value. Annually, between September 6th and 8th, the site hosts traditional festivities that attract visitors and devotees, celebrating this secular faith.
