The Church and Convent of Santa Cruz stands on one of the highest points in the historic center of Lamego, dominating the urban surroundings. In front of it extends a large granite-paved space, where the transition between the city's old fabric and the panoramic views over the Douro Valley can be perceived.
In the vicinity, narrow streets lead to viewpoints and gardens, conferring upon the complex a tranquil atmosphere, ideal for those seeking to contemplate the silhouette of the bell towers silhouetted against the sky.
The convent was founded at the end of the 16th century on the initiative of Lourenço Mourão Homem, a native of Lamego, intended for the Lóios friars. After the extinction of religious orders in 1834, the building served various military insignia and has maintained a military vocation to this day.
Inside the chancel lies the tomb of its founder, with tiles that reproduce an inscription in Latin, an intimate testimony to his connection to the place and the status then granted to the convent.
The main facade presents a Mannerist style with two bell towers and a central cloister body, resting on three perfect round arches. The external sobriety contrasts with the interior of a single nave, a choir loft, and interconnected chapels.
In the transept, the barrel vaults with coffers provide a sense of spaciousness, while the choir loft offers an elevated viewpoint over the main altar and the side chapels.
The side chapels are adorned with gilded woodwork of great decorative richness, where twisted columns, vegetal festoons, and cherubs are mixed in an interweaving of Baroque and Manueline motifs.
The polychrome ceramic panels date from the 17th and 18th centuries and recount biblical episodes, including scenes from the life of Saint Benedict and Saint Anthony, as well as depicting Saint Joseph's dream and the Marriage of the Virgin in the chapel dedicated to the Holy Family.
