The Anta da Arquinha da Moura is situated in the Vinhal area, in the town of Lajeosa do Dão, in the municipality of Tondela, district of Viseu. The monument is immersed in a predominantly rural environment, characterized by a tranquil landscape of agricultural fields, eucalyptus groves, and pine forests, providing a direct connection with nature. This dolmen is positioned between the basins of the Asnes and Dão rivers, set within a natural surrounding that invites observation. Its location is generally signposted on the nearest access roads, making it easier for visitors to find.
Also known as the Dolmen of Lajeosa, or popularly as "Pedra Merendeira," the Anta da Arquinha da Moura is a remarkable megalithic monument, dated to a period between 2900 and 2600 BC, corresponding to the late Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods. Classified as a Property of Public Interest, this dolmen represents an important testimony to the prehistoric human occupation of the region. Its popular name, "Pedra Merendeira" (roughly "Lunch Stone"), reflects a curious ancient practice of using its capstone as a table for outdoor meals, illustrating how the monument became integrated into local daily life over the centuries.
This classic dolmen stands out for its remarkable state of preservation. Its polygonal burial chamber is formed by seven large granite blocks, known as uprights, which stand over two and a half meters high. Preceding this chamber is a corridor, also composed of uprights and capstones, that extends for approximately four meters. The ensemble is unique in that it still preserves its mamoa, the compact earthen mound that originally covered the entire stone structure. This elliptical and considerably sized mamoa played a crucial role in the monument's excellent preservation to this day. Currently, the entrance to the chamber is protected by an iron gate that restricts access to its interior.
Archaeological excavations carried out at the Anta da Arquinha da Moura have revealed a valuable collection of artefacts that offer insights into the life and ritual practices of the peoples who built it. The finds include lithic objects, such as arrowheads, blades, and axes, as well as ceramic fragments and necklace beads. Equally significant were the discoveries of human remains from several individuals, confirming the dolmen's original funerary function. Although these remains are not displayed on-site, they are preserved in a museum in Tondela, where they can be studied and disseminated, contributing to the knowledge of this dolmen's archaeological importance.
