The Medieval Lagareta of Barroco is part of a set of ancient wine presses carved in stone, demonstrating the long tradition of wine in the municipality of Nelas. Its existence reinforces the importance of viticulture in the region since ancient times.
This lagareta has a large circular base where the grapes were trodden and pressed. The must drained through an opening into a lower deposit, making the most of the juice from the grapes. Next to it, there is an agricultural support house with cross-shaped markings, which indicates the continuous use of this space for the production and storage of wine.
The site dates back to the Middle Ages and is a valuable testimony to the wine-growing heritage of Santar. Even in the last century, oral accounts confirm that this lagareta continued to be used, reinforcing its historical relevance.
It is located in Santar, about 800 meters on foot from Avenida 25 de Abril (accessible via the EN-231). The "Lagareta Medieval" sign helps to reach the site, making the visit simple and practical.
