The Santo António Garden is located in the heart of Viseu city, occupying a central and easily accessible place. It is situated in front of the Church of the Convent of Santo António, at a point in the city that invites strolling and the discovery of the urban surroundings, offering a space of tranquility and beauty.
Conceived from a plan approved in 1915 and inaugurated in 1918, the Santo António Garden is the fruit of the vision of Captain Almeida Moreira. This notable figure played a fundamental role at the time, being responsible for the aesthetics, gardens, and parks of the city, including the emblematic Fontelo Park. His influence is evident in the conception of this space, which has become a green landmark of Viseu.
With a distinct trapezoidal plant design, the garden is punctuated by a central lake hosting a small island with a duck house, adding life and movement to the environment. Its flowerbeds are carefully delineated with boxwood in geometric patterns, complemented by grassy areas and explosions of color from flowers such as hydrangeas and agapanthus. The arboreal diversity is one of its greatest charms, featuring plane trees, cypresses, horse chestnuts, lime trees, camellias, and magnolias, which provide shade and different hues throughout the seasons.
The garden's winding paths lead to resting areas where benches with tile coverings are found. These elements of urban furniture were also designed by Captain Almeida Moreira in the 1930s, seeking inspiration from the elegant furniture of Maria Luísa Park in Seville. These tiles, restored in 2018, keep the local aesthetic and history alive, giving it a unique character and a touch of art integrated into the landscape.
The Santo António Garden stands out as a space that stimulates more than just sight. It was conceived as a sensory garden, incorporating flowerbeds specifically dedicated to smell and touch. This characteristic makes it particularly accessible and inviting, offering an enriching and inclusive experience for all visitors, including those with visual impairments.
