Jardim da Ribeira is located in the city of Viseu, within the São José Neighborhood. This green space is situated along the bank of the Pavia River, assuming a riverside position that marked its history. In the past, this location was situated beyond the walls that surrounded the city, establishing itself as an area outside the urban core.
Jardim da Ribeira, formerly known as Rossio da Ribeira, has a rich history. Since the 14th century, it has been the venue for the famous Feira Franca, a precursor to the current Feira de São Mateus, an annual event of great importance. Located outside Viseu's old city walls, this space played a vital role in the city's commerce and social life. In the 18th century, the site began to evolve into a leisure area, notably with the construction of a fountain whose fresh waters provided relief and amenity to its visitors.
Currently, Jardim da Ribeira features a quadrangular design, characterized by small flowerbeds with geometric borders, which add a decorative touch to the surrounding greenery. Its paths, both those encircling the garden and the interior ones, are made of earth, providing a natural and welcoming feel. It offers several benches, inviting visitors to rest and contemplate. At night, the installed lighting creates a distinct atmosphere, making it a pleasant place for a quiet and relaxing stroll in the city of Viseu.
