Located in São Pedro das Águias, Tabuaço municipality, this Romanesque church is situated in a unique area, specifically in Paradela and Granjinha. Its position is striking, built next to a cliff and with a view facing the Távora river gorge. This natural setting provides an atmosphere of tranquility and a harmonious integration into the landscape of Southern Douro.
The origin of the Romanesque Church of São Pedro das Águias dates back to a distant past, enveloped in legends and history. Popular tradition associates its foundation with figures of the Christian Reconquista, such as the knights D. Thedon and D. Rausendo. It is said that a Moorish princess, Ardínia, converted to Christianity out of love for D. Thedon, an event that legend points to as the initial impulse for the creation of this place of worship, around the year 991.
Initially linked to the Benedictine Order, the monastic community established here later adapted to the precepts of the Cistercian Order in 1145, under the leadership of Abbot D. Mendo. This transition marked a new phase in the life of the monastery, which flourished throughout the medieval centuries, leaving an architectural and spiritual legacy of great value.
One of the greatest attractions of the Romanesque Church of São Pedro das Águias lies in its remarkable sculptural ornamentation, concentrated at specific points of the building. On the lateral portal, visible on the north side, the tympanum features the figure of the Agnus Dei, the Lamb of God, depicted with its legs bent. At the keystone of this portal's arch, there is a Latin inscription, a fragment from Psalm 121, verse 8, which conveys the message: "The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore."
The main façade, which faces the rocky slope, displays even more luxuriant decoration, with orientalizing influences. Its tympanum features a pierced cross, symbolizing Jesus Christ, flanked by zoomorphic figures, namely vigilant lions with open eyes and heads turned outwards, which seem to guard the entrance to the temple and its sacred space. In addition to these, other inscriptions can be observed on ashlar blocks and in the chancel, including a funerary inscription on a detached tomb lid.
The Romanesque Church of São Pedro das Águias is recognized as one of the most distinctive examples of medieval architecture in the Southern Douro region. Its peculiar layout and the richness and variety of its sculptural work, especially visible in its portals and façade, give it a unique character and great artistic interest. Restored in the mid-20th century, this church remains an eloquent testimony to the history and Romanesque art in Portugal, inviting contemplation of its timeless beauty and the discovery of its historical layers.
