The Parish Church of Campia is located in the town of Campia, an integral part of the municipality of Vouzela, in the district of Viseu. Situated in the Cambarinho area, this church constitutes a central point in the life of the local community, serving as a landmark in the landscape and a gathering place for its inhabitants.
Its position within the town offers an opportunity to observe the serene and typically Portuguese environment that surrounds it, inviting a tranquil experience when visiting this space of faith and history.
This religious building, dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, stands as a testament to 18th-century Baroque architecture. Its construction, which spanned from 1750 to 1782, involved building upon the foundations of an earlier church, transforming and expanding the space into what is seen today. One can observe a longitudinal plan, characteristic of the era, which integrates the main nave and the chancel, fundamental elements for its function and aesthetics.
During the construction process, special attention was given to the new facade and the expansion of the high choir, details that contributed to the grandeur and proportion that the church presents to visitors.
Inside the church, the chancel reveals meticulous work, the fruit of the talent of stonemasons António Barbosa and Manuel António, who in 1768 were responsible for the stonework of this important space. The following year, in 1769, the sculptor João Ferreira Neto left his remarkable mark on the central piece of the altar, the main altarpiece.
This altarpiece, sculpted from chestnut wood, is an element of great artistic interest, reflecting the style and mastery of the artisans who, over several decades of the 18th century, contributed to the ornamental richness of the Campia Parish Church.
The Church of Saint Michael the Archangel remains, to this day, a vibrant center of religious and community life. In addition to its continuous parochial functions, the building hosts and actively participates in various cultural and traditional events of the town of Campia. This active role underlines its importance not only as architectural heritage but also as a meeting and sharing point that enriches the social fabric of the region.
