The Mother Church of São Miguel de Armamar is located in the heart of the town of Armamar, within the area encompassing Armamar and Queimada. Its presence is a central element in the urban landscape of the municipality, serving as a historical and architectural landmark that stands out in the village's environment.
This remarkable temple has its origin associated with a period dating back to the late 12th or early 13th century. A local tradition, rich in history, suggests that the church was built using stones from the already demolished Armamar Castle, and that its construction predates the foundation of Salzedas Monastery. Its initiative is also attributed to Egas Moniz, a prominent figure linked to King D. Afonso Henriques, although narratives diverge on whether he was responsible for the current temple or a primitive chapel that preceded it.
The architecture of the Mother Church of São Miguel reflects an interesting fusion of styles, with a predominance of Romanesque elements and some Gothic features. The building has a rectangular plan concept, with three naves, culminating in a robust square-based bell tower. Its integral construction in solid granite ashlar, visible on both the facade and interior, gives it a monumentality and resistance that endure through the centuries. In the rear part of the temple, the chancel is distinguished by its quarter-sphere ceiling.
Since its classification as a National Monument in 1922, the Mother Church of São Miguel de Armamar has been subject to continuous conservation efforts. Various interventions were carried out throughout the 17th, 18th, and 20th centuries. In the mid-20th century, between 1952 and 1956, works aimed at restoring its original Romanesque design took place. More recently, and celebrating the centenary of its classification, the period between February 2022 and February 2023 witnessed an important and comprehensive rehabilitation and restoration intervention. These works included the recovery of roofs, masonry, and pavements, as well as the meticulous restoration of mural paintings and various elements of sacred art, ensuring the safeguarding and beauty of this heritage for future generations.
