The Mother Church of Peva is located in the village of Peva, which is part of the municipality of Vila Nova de Paiva. Its edifice stands out in the local urban landscape, being slightly elevated in relation to the main street, which gives it a striking presence and allows for a view over the immediate surroundings.
The church's origins date back to the 11th century, with a base in the Romanesque style, whose initial characteristics were modified over time. In the 17th century, a new structure was erected, featuring more sober lines. Even after these transformations, it is still possible to find vestiges of the primitive Romanesque temple, such as some columns supporting the choir and the baptismal font, elements that bear witness to the long history of this place of worship. The chancel, one of the most relevant spaces, dates from the first half of the 18th century, marking a distinct phase of its evolution.
The interior of the church reveals the transition to the Baroque period, which contrasts with the simplicity of its exterior lines. The main altar is a notable example of this era, displaying rich gilded carving and a high level of artistic detail. One of the most distinctive elements is the chancel ceiling, adorned with meticulously painted coffers. These artworks represent the genealogy of Jesus Christ, as described in the Gospel of Saint Matthew, as well as figures of other important Saints, creating an engaging visual narrative for those who observe it.
