The Mother Church of Coura is located in the small village of Coura, which is part of the municipality of Armamar. The temple occupies a central position in the locality, integrated into a rural and tranquil environment, typical of the villages in this region. Its location invites quiet observation and the feeling of the place's serenity, allowing visitors to appreciate the architecture within its village context.
This temple is an example of the baroque style, characterized by its sober and functional architecture, which reflects the construction trends of the era. It features a longitudinal plan, a common configuration in parish churches, developing along a main axis, with a central nave and a chancel that stands out for being slightly narrower. The sacristy and the bell tower are integrated into the main body of the building, completing its harmonious structure.
One of the church's most distinct elements is its bell tower, which rises with a double belfry where the bells are housed. It has staircase access, a detail that emphasizes its functionality in the village's daily life. Inside, near the entrance, the baptistery can be found, positioned beneath the high choir, on the side traditionally associated with the Gospel. Outside the building, next to its walls, there are crosses (calvaries) with inscribed dates. These inscriptions serve as a visible record of the different construction periods or important conservation and renovation works that the temple underwent throughout the centuries.
