The Mother Church of Ariz is located in the locality of Ariz, which is part of the union of parishes of Pera Velha, Aldeia de Nacomba, and Ariz, belonging to the municipality of Moimenta da Beira. Nestled in the heart of this small community, the church stands out as a landmark in the landscape, reflecting its historical and cultural importance to the region.
Dating from the 17th century, the Mother Church of Ariz is an example of Baroque architecture in a rural context. Its exterior facade is distinguished by the simplicity of its lines, giving it an unadorned and welcoming appearance. At the top of the façade, an elegant cornice surmounts a double window, where the church's two bells rest, contributing to its characteristic silhouette.
Upon entering, visitors will find a space that includes the nave, sacristy, and church administrative house, culminating in the imposing chancel. In this chapel, one can observe oil-painted figures of saints, representing the apostolate. On the main altar, a low-relief altar frontal with fine carving stands out, its pattern mimicking damask, crowned by a valance and with a cross at its center. The ceilings are notable for their barrel vaults, divided into coffers with wooden backgrounds and embellished with florets at their intersections, which enrich the environment with ornamental details.
As the Mother Church, this building plays a central role in the history and identity of Ariz. Its construction in the 17th century gives it significant heritage value, being a testament to the art and faith of past eras. The preservation of its original features and the richness of its interior artistic details invite careful appreciation of its long history.
