Situated in the locality of Guardão, more precisely in Guardão de Baixo, this archaeological vestige is located within the municipality of Tondela. The section of the paved road is in the urban area of the village, although it follows the hillside with a layout that integrates into the surrounding rural landscape, sometimes flanked by walls and vegetation. Its route, sometimes more rectilinear, sometimes slightly sinuous, ends where it intersects with modern roads.
This stretch of Guardão's paved road is a remarkable testament to Roman engineering in Portuguese territory. Its typology and the course it describes indicate that it was built during the Roman era, forming part of a wider road network that was fundamental for communication and transport in Antiquity. It is a tangible link to a distant past, revealing the strategic importance of the region to the Romans.
The paved road is made up of robust granite slabs of varying sizes, which were carefully arranged. Upon observing the stones, the deep wear is visible, a result of the continuous passage of people, animals, and vehicles over hundreds of years. Approximately three and a half meters wide, this ancient route is preserved in good condition, allowing the identification of the larger stones that served as a finish or lateral delimitation of the original path.
Classified as a Property of Municipal Interest, this section of the Roman paved road is an element of high heritage value for the Tondela region. Its preservation highlights the historical richness of the site, transforming it into an accessible cultural landmark that invites reflection on past eras. It represents a concrete link to the memory of the paths that once united civilizations and communities.
