The Janardo Pillory is located in the village of Janardo, part of the municipality of Tondela, in the Guardão area. Situated in an urban environment, it is positioned halfway up a slope and stands out in a nook next to a public road. Its unique location allows for a peaceful observation of this heritage element within the local landscape.
This pillory represents a historical landmark of great importance, reflecting the administrative and judicial autonomy that the village of Janardo once possessed. Its history dates back to the 18th century, with its construction conjecturally associated with that period. Historical documents, such as the Parish Memories of 1758, already referred to the village's belonging to descendants of a squire of Infante D. Henrique, to whom the village was donated in the 15th century. Throughout the 20th century, the pillory suffered damage but was later recovered, preserving its form and its significance as a pillar of local memory. Currently, it is recognized as a historical-cultural landmark and has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1933, underlining its heritage value.
Built entirely of robust granite stonework, the Janardo Pillory features an architectural composition that mirrors the 18th-century style. Its base consists of a quadrangular plinth that rises in two steps. On this base rests a parallelepiped-shaped plinth, whose edges are chamfered from a third of its height. The shaft, with a square base and also with chamfered angles, culminates in a quadrangular block forming a projecting table. At the top, a pyramidal piece slightly curved towards the apex, crowned by a sphere, completes its distinctive silhouette.
