The Chapel is located in the peaceful area of Foz de Baixo, part of the locality of Avões, in the municipality of Lamego. Set in a serene rural landscape, this ancient monument stands on a small elevation, flanked by historic buildings that complement its aura of antiquity and quietude.
Its location, far from the urban bustle, invites a moment of contemplation, offering a calm perspective on the surrounding landscape that accentuates its historical and cultural importance.
The Chapel of São Pedro de Balsemão represents one of the rarest and most significant examples of High Medieval religious architecture in Portugal. Its foundation dates back to very ancient periods, possibly the 7th century, reflecting Visigothic influences that make it a historical landmark in the Iberian Peninsula. This primitive origin gives it exceptional value in the study of built heritage.
Over the centuries, the monument underwent transformations, with notable additions in later periods, such as the Baroque, which altered its exterior physiognomy. However, the essence of its original design, particularly the interior arrangement of three naves, was preserved. This place also served as a pantheon for important figures, including a bishop of Porto, D. Afonso Pires, whose Gothic tomb is still found inside, linking it to crucial moments in local history.
The chapel stands out for its basilical plan, with articulated volumes that tell the story of its various constructive phases. On the exterior, despite Baroque and Mannerist modifications, one can still observe the simplicity of its structure and the small bell tower above the main door. The facade, a result of 17th and 18th-century interventions, incorporates coats of arms and inscriptions that bear witness to the families who owned and shaped this space over time.
Inside, the arrangement of the three naves is remarkable, with horseshoe arches supported by Corinthian-inspired capitals, some of which were reused from Roman constructions. The geometric-based decorations, present at various points, constitute a valuable High Medieval artistic ensemble, almost unique in the Iberian Peninsula. It is also possible to observe the presence of Roman altars, integrated into the structure, which demonstrate the profound antiquity of the site and the reuse of materials from remote eras.
