Ferreira de Aves Castle, or Ferreira de Aves Tower as it is better known, is located in the village of Casfreires, an area belonging to the parish of Ferreira de Aves, in the municipality of Sátão. Its position is embedded in the urban and rural fabric of the region, serving as a landmark for those traversing this area.
The history of this fortification dates back to ancient times, with its origins attributed to the presence of the Romans in the Iberian Peninsula. Over the centuries, the original structure was utilized and adapted by different peoples, notably by the Muslims, who also left their mark on the region. Later, during the Reconquista period, the castle underwent significant restoration work, promoted by D. Teresa, a prominent figure in Portuguese history, widow of Count D. Henrique.
Of what was once a more extensive castle, today remains a robust medieval tower, standing out for its presence and characteristic design. Upon observing the tower, it is possible to identify distinct architectural elements, such as the geminated windows, which add an interesting detail to its facade. The main access to the tower is through an arched doorway, a common feature in medieval defensive constructions, inviting a closer observation of its interior structure.
