The Church of Ester is located in the serene village of Ester, a hamlet that is part of the Union of Parishes of Parada de Ester and Ester, in the municipality of Castro Daire. Situated in the area known as Ribeira, this church is set in a rural and tranquil environment, approximately twelve kilometers from the municipal seat. The village of Ester benefits from its proximity to the right bank of the River Paiva, a natural element that adds scenic beauty to the church's surroundings.
The history of the Church of Ester dates back to very ancient times, its origin predating the very foundation of Portuguese nationality. Initially, this church was an Abbey of the Mitre and belonged to the Ecclesiastical District of Douro, which underscores its importance and stature in the religious context of the time. Throughout the centuries, the Church of Ester had strong ties with other religious institutions, including belonging to the Monastery of São Pedro de Arouca until the year 1133.
The building that can be seen today in the village of Ester reflects the architectural characteristics of the mid-18th century, a period during which it was built or substantially remodeled. This construction, dedicated to Saint Peter, its patron saint, exhibits distinctive features of the era. Its historical and cultural importance is officially recognized, with the Church of Ester classified as a Property of Public Interest, which ensures its preservation and highlights its patrimonial value in the national landscape.
