The Diocese of Viseu, as an ecclesiastical institution, has its main seat in the city of Viseu, located in Bairro São José. The Episcopal House, the central point of the diocesan administration, is located on Rua Nunes de Carvalho. Although its territorial scope is vast, extending over a large part of the Viseu district and some parishes in the Guarda and Aveiro districts, its historical and administrative essence is concentrated in the heart of the city. Viseu is positioned in a central area of Portugal, characterized by its granite landscape and the unique cultural and climatic features of the Beira Alta region.
The history of the Diocese of Viseu is deeply rooted, with its origins dating back to the 6th century. Ancient documents, dated 569, already attest to its existence, and in 572 the presence of the first bishop in the region is confirmed. Throughout the centuries, the Diocese witnessed and actively participated in decisive moments of Portuguese history. It is an area of great historical relevance, as it is believed that D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, may have been born and baptized here, in the old cathedral. Later, in the 14th century, the city was also the birthplace of D. Duarte, who would become king. The figure of Saint Teotónio, a prior who lived in the 12th century and is the patron saint of the city and the Diocese, represents the community's profound connection to its faith throughout the ages.
The physical epicenter of the Diocese of Viseu is its imposing Sé Cathedral, a building that reveals itself as a compendium of styles and eras. The first episcopal constructions on the site date back to the 6th century, but the cathedral we observe today began to take shape in the 12th century, under the influence of King D. Afonso Henriques. Various prelates left their mark on its construction and remodeling. In the early 16th century, Bishop D. Diogo Ortiz de Vilhegas was responsible for the remarkable current vault and the creation of a new facade in Manueline style. Shortly thereafter, D. Miguel da Silva had the lower cloister built. Inside the Sé, it is possible to appreciate artworks of great value, including a painting by Vasco Fernandes that stands out for being one of the first to portray an indigenous figure from America in Portugal, about five hundred years ago. This architectural and artistic ensemble is a reflection of the Diocese's importance and rich heritage.
