The Anta do Repilau, also known locally as Lapa do Repilau, is situated in the Lobagueira area, in the village of Coutos de Viseu, part of the municipality of Viseu. This prehistoric monument is immersed in a predominantly rural and forest landscape, characterized by pine forests and cultivated land, offering a serene environment conducive to contact with nature. Its location allows for a peaceful visit, integrated into the region's countryside setting.
Dating from the Megalithic Era, between 2900 and 2640 BC, the Anta do Repilau is a remarkable example of ancestral funerary architecture. Built of granite, its grand structure is composed of a polygonal chamber and an elongated corridor. The chamber, which rises to about 2.75 meters in height and extends for approximately 4 meters in width, connects to a corridor over 5 meters long, maintaining a constant height of 1.8 meters. The absence of a capstone allows for observation of the imposing nature of its orthostats.
This dolmen distinguishes itself by the presence of unique artistic elements, which offer a glimpse into the cultural expressions of remote times. On its orthostats, it is possible to observe engravings of a vaguely anthropomorphic nature, rare in the context of Peninsular megalithic art. Additionally, the Anta do Repilau holds an even more unusual detail: a small line segment painted in red, subtly inscribed in one of the grooves, adding an element of mystery and historical value to this heritage.
The Anta do Repilau is a site of great archaeological importance, recognized as a Property of Public Interest, which underlines its value to national heritage. Its existence was formally documented for the first time in 1923. Over the decades, the monument has been subject to various archaeological interventions, notably in 1966 and 1988, which contributed to its understanding and preservation. Currently, the dolmen is a historical-cultural landmark that connects us directly to the legacy of the prehistoric communities of Beira Alta.
