The Pillory of Chavães stands in the center of the village, in the main square. This central location, on flat ground, allows for easy and accessible observation of the monument, which stands out in the village's urban environment, inviting a moment of pause to appreciate its discreet yet significant presence.
This pillory, dating from the 17th century, more precisely from 1698, is a silent testament to a time when Chavães possessed its own charter, a distinction that conferred upon the locality the status of a town and its own judicial autonomy. In ancient times, it served as a symbol of local power and justice, where laws were read and sentences applied. Today, its role has transformed, assuming the function of a valuable historical-cultural landmark that connects us to the past of a community with its own identity.
Built from solid granite ashlar, the Pillory of Chavães is distinguished by its rustic craftsmanship and unpretentious simplicity. The monument rests on a base of three square steps, precisely cut. The shaft, quadrangular in shape, is of lighter construction, with its corners slightly rounded. At the top, a prismatic block, though low in height, crowns the structure, displaying the date 1698 on one of its faces. To complete the ensemble, a small pyramid emerges from the center of the block, lending a final touch to this piece of heritage.
