The Castro de Santa Luzia is located on Monte de Santa Luzia, in the area of Vila Nova do Campo, in the municipality of Viseu. Situated on a quartz hill at an altitude of 633 meters, the site is nestled in a tranquil rural environment, surrounded by a forest park of eucalyptus and pine trees. Its elevated position offers a wide and serene perspective over the surrounding landscape, providing a harmonious natural setting for observing the remains.
This ancient fortified settlement, classified as a Property of Public Interest, has its roots in protohistory. There is evidence that the site was inhabited since the 10th century BC, with a continuous human presence extending until the 7th century BC. Investigations indicate that the first phase of the castro's occupation ended with a fire, but the community returned and rebuilt its life in the same location shortly after, demonstrating the strategic and residential importance of the mount over millennia.
Currently, visitors can observe part of the original wall section that once circularly delimited this settlement. Built of granite, this defensive structure is located a short distance from the summit of the elevation. Although a portion of the wall disappeared in the 19th century due to quartz mining activities in the area, the visible elements remain a testament to the engineering and life of its ancient inhabitants. Archaeological excavations carried out throughout the 20th century allowed the discovery of valuable artifacts, such as fibulae, ceramic fragments, grinders, and other bronze objects, which offer a glimpse into the daily life and culture of those who lived here.
