The Chapel of São Sebastião is situated in the Braços de Cá urbanization, integrated into the locality of Castro Daire. It stands on a hillside, on a platform that distinguishes it from the surrounding terrain. Its position offers a specific urban setting, with the main facade facing the public road and separated by a parvis that provides an open perspective of the building.
Evidence suggests that a primitive chapel may have existed on this site as early as the 16th century. However, the structure we see today is the result of a significant reconstruction that took place in 1713, giving it its 18th-century design. A curious fact in the history of the Chapel of São Sebastião is its relocation. In 1860, the building was moved to its current site, having originally been located in the area where the Paços do Concelho of Castro Daire are found today.
The Chapel of São Sebastião exhibits an interesting fusion of Mannerist and Baroque styles. Its plan is longitudinal, with a single nave leading to a high altar. The latter is one of the focal points of the interior, standing out for its elaborate gilded carving, which follows the "national style." The entire high altar is marked by four columns that extend into concentric arches, creating a distinct visual effect. A design peculiarity is the access door to the sacristy, skillfully concealed and incorporated into the carving itself. The chapel's windows reveal traces of mural paintings with vegetal motifs, and the ceiling, at one time, was adorned with forty gilded carved coffers, whose decoration harmonized with the elements of the high altar.
The recognition of the cultural and historical importance of the Chapel of São Sebastião is formalized by its classification as a Property of Public Interest. This designation, awarded in 1961, underscores the building's relevance in the national heritage landscape, ensuring its preservation and highlighting its contribution to the identity and history of Castro Daire.
