The Alagoa Rock Art Station is situated in the peaceful area of Corveira, integrated into the locality of Castelões, in the municipality of Tondela. This archaeological site is set in a predominantly rural environment, marked by the confluence of two small hillocks. The surrounding landscape is of remarkable interest, characterized by a clearing that highlights the site, harmoniously flanked by a wild pine forest, offering a natural and serene setting.
This remarkable archaeological site offers a fascinating glimpse into the life and artistic expressions of communities that inhabited the region in the Late Prehistory. The ensemble consists of eight schist rocks, whose surfaces bear engravings dating back to ancient times. These marks, hundreds in total, constitute a valuable record of human presence and beliefs from very distant eras, making the site a point of deep cultural and historical interest.
The engravings present on the Alagoa rocks are a unique testimony of open-air rock art. Diverse motifs are observed, including podomorphs (representations of human feet, both shod and barefoot, of adults and children), horseshoes, cup-marks, and complex designs of circles and semicircles, as well as a rectangular-plan structure. These figures were executed using the pecking technique, a process that involved the use of lithic tools, such as quartz pebbles, to strike and engrave the rock surface. Many of the engravings appear superimposed on horizontal and sub-horizontal panels, revealing different phases of intervention over time and the symbolic richness of these rocky panels.
