The Pillory of Castelo is located in the tranquil village of Castelo, part of the municipality of Moimenta da Beira. It stands in a modest, slightly west-sloping village square, inviting a moment of pause. It is near a rustic stone wall and a fountain, elements that help to define the calm and traditional atmosphere of this rural area.
This pillory represents an important memory of Castelo's administrative past, once a municipality with its own autonomy and jurisdiction. Its presence symbolizes the local power and justice that were exercised here, at a time when the village had an an independent administration. Although the existence of the municipality of Castelo dates back to the early 16th century, the visible structure of the pillory suggests a later construction, possibly in the year 1669, a date engraved on one of its upper blocks. This monument was recognized for its historical relevance and classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1933.
Built entirely of robust granite stonework, the Pillory of Castelo features a simple design and a rustic appearance, characteristic of the era in which it was constructed. Its base rests on two quadrangular steps, which show clear signs of the passage of time and natural wear. The column, or shaft, rises directly from the upper step. It is a singular piece, with a square section and an irregular shape that reveals less refined carving, giving it a particularly authentic look.
At the top of the column, two superimposed cubic pieces stand out. The upper piece, topped by a small square pyramid, has molded faces, although its original decoration is, nowadays, almost illegible due to the action of time. This stone ensemble serves as a silent testament to the traditions and daily life of Castelo throughout the centuries.
